Book Description

Run.
That’s what instinct told me.
But in order to save the secrets of my people
and to protect my brother
I have to become the enemy.
From Goodreads

My thoughts:

The Violet Fox is a Young Adult fantasy set in a world, where there are two kinds of groups: The Marlenia and Freetors. The Marlenia are the priviledged ones, and live above the ground, while Freetors, live underground. Kiera is a Freetor, and will do anything to help her people.

This  actioned packed story is written in Kiera's point of view, and gives us a glimpse of her thoughts, what she is going through, the kind of decisions she has to make in order to survive.
I really liked her character. She's stubborn, fearless, determined, and dedicated. Although she acts tough, she has a weakness, namely her brother, and later on the Prince.

The worldbuilding for this story was superbly done. I could picture the underground place the Freetors lived, above on land where the Marlenia lived. The sights, and sounds through Kiera's eyes.

The romance:- what can I say, I do love a good romance weaved in the story and this one was done really well. Had some sighworthy moments.

The characters, each and every one of them had their own voice and mannerism. I could totally picture them.

There were some twists that caught me by suprise--which is a very good thing.

My favourite passages:

"He moved my black locks of hair out of my face and brought his lips--the lips that I had once slashed--to mine. I took thescars into my mouth and moved my tongue gently over them, as if hoping to repair them and make them truly one with mine. They weren't Freetor, they weren't Marlenian, they were lips, and those lips belonged to me. And when we parted, it was like he had taken a piece of  me with him."

How romantic is that?

"Father. People of Marlenia." Keegan reached for my hand and led me to the center of the pavillion. "Yes. This is the Violet Fox. The symbol of hope for the Freetor prople. The thorn on our side."

I loved the ending! Now, I'm really looking forward to the next book in the series.

Shadow of the Witte Wieven Blog Tour

Book Title: Shadow of the Witte Wieven

Author: Debbie Peterson

Genre: Paranormal Romance

Publisher: InkSpell Publishing

Publication Date: April 21st 2012

Format: eBook, Kindle, Paperback

Rating: 5/5 Stars

Book Synopsis:

Despite a contract on her head, lone Drug Enforcement Agent, Aliyana Montijo must ferret out a mole and stop the assassination of top DEA officials, as so ordered by the Colombian drug lord she seeks to take down. The task is a daunting one, for there is no one she can trust. No one that is, until she encounters a most unlikely ally.

Former seventeenth century captain of the Dutch West Indies Company, Wolfaert Dircksen Van Ness, now from a parallel dimension, encounters the beautiful agent during an unearthly storm in the Bermuda triangle. Drawn to the Spanish beauty he rescues, he pledges his assistance, despite her reluctance to accept either his help or his heart.

Can Wolf bridge both space and time to claim the woman he loves?

Book Excerpt
Aliyana nodded as she released a breath and said, “Yes, as a matter of fact they did. Hank has demanded a tour of Mercado’s empire. He said that he wants to see the way they produce cocaine from start to finish. By so doing, he could point out their faults and help them improve production. According to Ortiz, Hank had the audacity to boast about his knowledge of the latest in drug manufacturing technology as if they were a bunch of ignorant ‘campesinos.’ As you can imagine, this rankled them a bit.”
“I’m surprised they aren’t going to use this outing as an excuse to kill him,” Cornelius remarked.
Aliyana shrugged as she cast a brief glance downward. “They actually mentioned that. However, as much as Mercado would like to permanently get rid of the man, he’s going to show a bit of restraint and allow the ‘pig’ to live—for now.”
“Did they mention whether or not Mercado planned to comply with this requested tour?” asked Cornelius.
“He is going to comply, but not in the way Hank intends,” she replied. “Mercado is going to take him much farther south, to a factory and lab he no longer uses. He is sending some of his employees ahead to clean the place up and make ready for their visit. Emil wants everything to look as if the lab is in full swing.”
“So Mercado is conducting the tour personally then?” asked Wolf.
“Yes, he is. He doesn’t trust Hank. Therefore, he wants to observe his every movement, personally.”
“How long will it take them to get to this lab?”
“If it’s the one I think it is, about three, maybe four hours. Why do you ask?”
Wolf brushed a hand against his beard as he contemplated this unexpected opportunity. “How many such places could he possibly take Morris?”
“I only know of two,” she said.
“How long would it take to get to other one?”
Aliyana shook her head as she lifted a shoulder. “Oh, I don’t know—perhaps an additional half an hour or so. That’s why I think he’ll opt for the closest one.”
“Did they say when they intend to conduct this tour?”
“Day after tomorrow. Hank is supposed to arrive at dawn. If you still want to follow the man, you will get your chance then.”
“So travel time, to and from is at least six hours, maybe more,” Wolf mused aloud. “The tour itself will take some time. What would you think, another hour maybe two for him to thoroughly inspect the facilities?”
“Every bit of that and then some,” Aliyana said as she knit her brows in consternation. “Wolf, why are you asking all of these questions?”
“With Mercado out of the way, I’m thinking this might be the perfect opportunity to escort you inside the man’s office so you can raid those files on his computer.”
“But we don’t have all of the numbers to his pass code yet,” Aliyana replied. “I can’t get inside without them.”
In response to the reminder, he allowed a slight smile to emerge and for several long moments, he held her gaze without saying a word. Her confusion finally gave way to understanding. He could see it. She drew in a sharp breath as a burst of anger exploded onto her cheeks.
“You have the ability to get me inside that office anytime you want to, don’t you Captain Wolfaert Dircksen Van Ness,” she spat.
Wolf folded his arms against his chest, flashed a full-fledged grin, and bounced his brows.
“I can’t believe you would withhold that information from me,” she seethed as her eyes shot lethal daggers into his person. “And you just let me keep watching that screen for hours on end when such a need didn’t exist—”
“Oh come on, Aliyana,” Wolf laughingly protested. “You surely didn’t think I’d allow you to go in there until the safest possible moment, did you?”

His humor did nothing to improve her anger. If anything, it only served to fuel it. She shook her head then and let him have it--with both barrels blazing--in Spanish, of course. And he enjoyed every minute of the delightful display.

My Review:

Shadow of the Witte Wieven is an original take on the paranormal genre. Aliyana works for the DEA, and she is almost wrapping up her case. Her case, to catch the Columbian drug lord Emil Mercado. She is working on the last minute details, collecting evidence which will ensure Emil's arrest. Upon completing this task she makes a run for it, only to find her source of transport, her bike missing. She hijacks Emil's plane - after kicking some butts along the way - and flies, escaping the guards and gunshots raining all around her.
Then something interesting happens. Without warning, the weather shifts suddenly and as she manouevre the plane, she crashes into rocks, losing consciousness.

When she later wakes up, she finds herself inside a lighthouse, and beside her the handsome Dutchman Captain Wolfaert, the captain of the Wieven.

Ms. Peterson weaved a truly wonderful story. The characters were an absolute treat.Aliyana is a strong character, self-sufficient. Inside that tough girl look and act, is someone  who is sensitive, insecure when it comes to promises. After all what has happened to her with her family, I emphathised and understood her. Wolfaert, is just as lovable, a strong character who really complements Aliyana. The Wolf  crew has a wonderful collection of characters as well, funny and loyal to their captain, and later Aliyana.

I highly recommend this book to fans of paranormal. It's unique and different, descriptions wonderfully done.

The Universal Mirror Blog Tour

On the island of Cercia, the gods are dead, killed by their followers and replaced with the study of magic. Magicians are forbidden to leave their homeland. Laws bind these men that prevent them from casting spells on the living—whether to harm or to heal.

Quentin, a young nobleman, challenges these laws out of love for his wife. His best friend, Asahel, defies authority at his side, unaware that the search for this lost magic will bring them both to the edge of reason, threatening their very souls. The Universal Mirror shows how far two men are willing to go for the sake of knowledge and what they will destroy to obtain it

Building Cercia: The World of The Universal Mirror
Gwen Perkins

Grave robbing, healing plagues, and fighting mages—these are just some of the events that lie ahead for Quentin and Asahel, the protagonists of my new fantasy novel, The Universal Mirror.  This is fantasy that doesn't rely on dragons or elves but is centered by magic and moral conflicts.  Several readers and reviewers have commented on the richness of the setting as well as its medieval feel, wondering how the island of Cercia came to be and where I developed the details.  Today, I'd like to talk a little bit about the inception of this novel and the real history that inspired it to shed some light on this subject.

The novel itself began when I was talking to one of my children about Leonardo da Vinci and how he was one of the first artists to use human anatomy in his work.  I recalled that he had dissected corpses in order to learn how muscles worked and also recollected that this type of knowledge wasn't that typical at the time (and in fact, had been forbidden at one earlier point).  The idea lingered and I put away, thinking nothing much of it.

Now, I am not an artist.  I can't draw a straight line and the closest I've ever come to origami is making a thousand paper airplanes that never flew.  But like many who can't draw, I have an intense admiration for those who can.

It struck me as I was looking at some art on the internet that art is really a form of magic.  Which led me to further questions... why, in so many fantasy novels, were there so few prohibitions against magic by their governments?  Wouldn't a government try to control magic?  Wouldn't religion?  Then I began to wonder what would happen if a government did try to control it, how they might do so, and why they would have the need to do so.

Then I developed a fascination with lampworking which is the art of blowing glass into beads.  As I began to learn how to do this myself, I started reading about the history of glassblowing.  It was then that I discovered the story of the glassblowers of Murano.  Murano is a series of islands near Venice that became famous for glassworking when all the glassmakers in Venice were forced to move there in order to contain fires.  (This was in 1291.)  The glassmakers were unique on Murano—unlike other artisans, they were allowed to carry swords and held high status because of their art.  However, there was a caveat.  Because of the fear that the state would lose the secrets of making glass, the glassmakers were never allowed to leave.

If you've read The Universal Mirror, this sounds very familiar, I'm sure.  It's one of the Heresies—or prohibitions that govern mages—in the novel.

Once I had all of these pieces together, I transformed them into elements of the book.  The artists became magicians who were trying to work against the government because they disagreed with its prevention of scientific pursuit (in this case, healing).  The culture of magic changed as well as I incorporated the history of the Murano glassblowers into my own world, tying magic with class and social status while preventing those who practiced it from leaving Cercia.  These elements have also led to developments in the subsequent books I am writing in the series (and, I note, to researching all kinds of interesting stories and artifacts as one idea led to another).

In conclusion, I'd simply like to note that spending a little time thinking about and researching events that have happened before can greatly enhance even the most fantastic of worlds.  Don't be afraid to mine moments from your own life—people are still people, no matter what time or place they may be from.  Some ideas and emotions are, after all, universal.

Until Next Time: The Angel Chronicles, Book 1 Summary

How does a girl choose between the one who steals her heart and the one who owns her soul?

Matt and Emily were created for a specific job. Raised and trained as the ultimate angel/warrior team, they are sent down to save, defend, judge and forgive, depending on the 'life' they've been assigned. What they don't realize is that the power of human emotions, such as love, anger, passion and fear can take over even the best of souls, causing them to make mistakes and follow paths that lead to confusion and heartache.

When the reason for their training is finally revealed, the angel/warrior team find themselves thrust into a world they know nothing about. Matt takes over the life of Daniel, a young man with a great deal of baggage. Emily becomes Liz, a girl living in a remote village who relies on nothing more than her own strength to survive. A violent storm erupts one night, and framed in the window of Liz's establishment is a frightening face. Let in by the soul of a Good Samaritan, the two visitors bring with them a past full of secrets that could literally change an angel's path and a warrior's plans.

From murder to redemption, this angel/warrior team must find a way to keep the faith they have in each other in a world that's ripping them apart.

Currently, she lives with her daughter, mother and a rambunctious German Shepherd named Reuben, in the beautiful state of New Mexico.

My Review:
Until Next Time is about angels. Amy Lignor created angels (characters) who are both fun and quirky.

Emily and Matt are angels, soulmates. They are sent to earth to gather knowledge/information,to better understand humans. They are assigned to two human 'shells'namely, Liz and Daniel. And in order to inhabit those bodies, they don't retain any memories of being in Heaven. Liz has had a hard life. One stormy night Liz and her friend Faith meet Charles and Jason, who later play a big part in both lives. Emily and Matt exeprience and see so much as humans, and partner until the end.

I enjoyed Until Next Time's unique storyline. The story is about choices, friendship, love, acceptance, forgiveness and quite an emotional story at that. I look forward to the second book in the series.

Hunters Book Tour - Hunter's book excerpt by Gregory Marshall Smith

Today I have the pleasure of hosting Gregory Marshall Smith, the author of Hunters. I will be posting the review soon, as it isn't on this post. In the meantime, enjoy the excerpt. :)

Hunters

Format:  Kindle Edition
File Size:  459 KB

Once, Lin Tang was a naive teenager, keeper of an ancient mystical art on an isolated mountain in China. In one rebellious moment, she left her home for the bright lights of Shanghai. Just as quickly, her naïveté turned her into a creature of the night, concubine for one master after another until she fell into the hands of Louis Riordan. Then, after many painful hours of training with sensei Lo Chang, she transformed herself into Riordan’s lethal enforcer and one of the most feared vampires in North America.

Her old life lost to her, she has made the most of her new one, building a mini empire of power and respect. But, it is all about to end. A band of humans has dared to challenge her master, Riordan. Even worse, unbeknownst to her, one of those humans is Cantrell Ryker, her most hated enemy, literally returned from the grave. Soon, Lin Tang will be in the most important fight of her life, for these humans, these Hunters won’t stop until they’ve taken her very soul.

Excerpt

Lin Tang’s sword never connected with Jessie’s head. A sharp sound coming out of the darkness stopped her mid-strike. The sound repeated at regular intervals and echoed throughout the cavernous warehouse. A perplexed Lin could only make out a silhouette stepping into the light, clapping its hands in a way that was more sarcastic than congratulatory.
“I can’t believe they wanted to leave me behind for this mission,” Cantrell Ryker said as he stepped fully into the light. “Clearly, they needed all the help they could get, right, Lin? You should know because, obviously, the half-deads weren’t all you trained them to be, either. Apparently, man cannot live by undead alone.
“Your half-deads look pretty tranquilized. Of course, my people don’t look so good either. I’m guessing those swords give you the edge. Thank you very much. I’ll be here all week. Remember to tip your waitresses.”
Lin stepped away from Jessie, swinging her sword menacingly as she sized up her newest opponent. Clearly, she didn’t recognize him. She also wasn’t laughing at his humor.
“Not in the mood to laugh, eh?” Ryker teased. “Well, it’s not like you paid to get in here. Of course, your half-deads did, though I’m guessing they didn’t get the two-drink minimum. Before I forget, Diane, would you please take that cattle prod away from my teammate’s head?”
“Ah, we have someone with a sharp wit,” Lin noted. “Perhaps I can do something to cut you down to size.”
“Yeah, Lin, I’m going to recommend you keep your day job,” Ryker said. “And Diane, didn’t I say to get the cattle prod away from Kelly’s head? It’s attached to her shoulders and we need them to cry on.”
Kelly gasped, eyes wide, caught off-guard by the remark despite the dire situation.
Ryker took a few steps toward Diane, who realized he meant business and moved away from Kelly. No doubt, she was intimidated by his imposing appearance. He had battle dress black on, and wore a heavy blue and black leather biker jacket. Strangely enough, the sleeves of the jacket’s forearms were bulkier than normal. He also wore thick black gloves with extra padding on the knuckles.
“Hey, I’m over here,” Lin warned. “My chief half-dead is off-limits, whatever your name is.”
“Oh, Lin, I am so disappointed,” Ryker replied, facetiously. “Don’t tell me you never bothered to put a face to the name? That’s really unprofessional. Especially, since I’ve been after you for such a long time.”
Lin stepped away from the downed Hunters and angled her way under a lamp to get a better look at her new foe. He had clearly piqued her interest with his cockiness in the face of long, if not impossible, odds. By the way she furrowed her eye brows, she was clearly trying to place his face.
“I kept a low profile while I searched,” Ryker continued. “Now, it turns out the woman who hated me the most, never knew what I really looked like. That’s like a shot to the heart. Or two in the kneecaps.”
Lin’s face lit up.
“Cantrell Ryker,” she remarked, barely holding back long-buried tensions. “You bastard.”
“Yes, ma’am,” Ryker said, with alarming casualness. “In my case, an accident of…no, actually, my parents were married. Anyway, you, ma’am, you’re a – well, no you’re not because you’re female. You know, I really don’t know where I’m going with this.”
Lin reached back and whipped out her other sword. She glared at Ryker with an animalistic intensity that seemed completely out of character to her normal demeanor. If Ryker saw it, he didn’t let on that it affected him in any way.
“Let me tell you where you are going,” she snarled. “To the ninth circle of hell.”
Lin lifted her swords and inched closer to Ryker. He responded by snapping his left arm downward. Almost on cue, a long piece of cylindrical, but solid metal slid down into his gloved hand. He gripped the rod, snaking his fingers through the handle guard that enclosed the rubber grips at the end of it.
“You were hiding from me,” Lin stated. “You deprived me of revenge for my sensei, Lo Chang, for three years. I will make you wish you stayed dead.”
With his right hand, Ryker reached behind his back, going up under his heavy jacket and pulled out a long, rather wicked-looking knife. It was curved and gleamed in the light, from tip to the hand grip. The thing was slightly less than half the length of Lin’s blades, making both Diane’s and Kelly’s jaws drop. Even Lin had to take a second look at a blade that looked solid enough to parry her own.
“Okay, Lin,” Ryker stated, simply. “Only one of us is walking out of here. And it’s not going to be you.”
“You really think you can take me, Ryker?” she asked, in a voice that dripped with pure venom. “Fat chance.”
“You, of all people, should know not to underestimate an opponent, Lin,” Ryker countered. “I might not be as strong as Miss Morales. Or, as experienced in combat as Mr. Van Niekerk. Or, as tough as Mr. Wesley. But, I survived for three years in hiding, taking out every vampire whose path I crossed. Single-handed.”
“Enough!” Lin screamed. “It’s time to die!”
“Well, we should all have a dream.”

*************************************

Above Kane’s body, the two silhouettes stopped. One stepped forward, into the moonlight, pulling something long and shiny from somewhere on his person. He raised it and, with one swing, made sure Kane would never take the blood of anyone again.
“God, I hate it when you do that, Ryker,” said the woman next to him.
“Show some backbone,” the man called Ryker snorted. “For a change.”
The woman glared at him, but stopped when she heard a moan nearby. She played her flashlight back into the shadows. Cursing, she moved over to Heidi’s body.
She didn’t pay attention as Kane’s corpse suddenly flared up like a match, dying out almost as quickly. Caring only about Kane’s victim, she called Ryker over to her.
“What about her?” she queried, sounding forlorn and sad. “She’s lost a lot of blood. She’s well into the turn. You know we can’t let that happen.”
“No, we can’t,” Ryker agreed. “But she might be one for the doc.”
“Always the pretty ones, right Cantrell?” the female commented, with disgust.
“Au contraire. I saved you, didn’t I?”
Glaring at him, the woman fought the urge to hit him with her flashlight.
“Very funny,” she said finally. “Okay, check her out then. If you think she’s worth salvaging, we’ll take her. But, if she can’t be helped, you’re the one who has to finish her.”
“So I have to do all the work, eh?” Ryker commented. “What else is new?”
Ryker looked down into Heidi’s eyes, feeling pity instantly. He knew she was yet another innocent victim, in a war she didn’t know had been declared. He saw her eyes darting wildly side to side, as if the brain behind them could not handle what was happening to it. Shaking his head, he checked her throat, touched her carotid artery, and looked at her skin pallor.
“I’m truly sorry about this, Miss,” Ryker said. “I really am. But, it’s war and everybody dies.”
As he lifted his obscenely long knife into her field of vision, her eyes stopped darting and grew wide in stark fear. Breaking contact with her almost pleading eyes, he lifted the knife and brought it down toward Heidi’s head.

***********************************

Ryker frowned.
“Come on, Marcus,” he cajoled. “You, of all people, should be on my side. Or least, able to see things from my viewpoint. We might never get another chance like this. Sixteen – count ‘em, sixteen clan masters in one place. We can't let a golden opportunity like this slip away.”
“Doesn’t matter, my friend,” Marcus shot back. “The decision has been made and we will all abide by it. Cantrell, we asked you into this group because we needed you. We need your expertise, but we need to know if you can stick with us, even when things don't go your way. Can we count on you?”
Ryker said nothing. He turned away and walked up to one of the windows on the garage door. Looking out through the dirty glass, he saw the traffic on Jacksboro Highway whizzing by. All those innocent people, he thought.
He abruptly moved to his right, aiming for a red button on the wall that would make the door lift.
"I can't let you do that, Cantrell," Marcus blurted.
"Oh, so I don't like a decision – I'm an ungrateful jackass," Ryker sniped, without turning to look back. "But, if you don't like a decision, it's okay? You know what, Marcus? I'd tell you to fuck yourself, but you've got Angelica for that."
"Why, you ungrateful piece of crap," Angelica snapped.
"Now, now, Angelica, I'm sure that's just the steroids talking," Ryker said, mockingly, as he went back to trying to open the garage door. "You guys can keep my stuff. I'd rather leave it than spend another minute with a bunch of cowards."
"That is enough!"
Marcus' words boomed throughout the garage. Ryker stopped reaching for the red button, instead, let his hand drop. He was no fool and his hearing was still as good as ever. He mentally sifted out Marcus' booming voice and keyed on a sound so slight anyone without his experience would easily have missed it.
"You'd better pull that freakin' trigger now, Marcus," Ryker snorted, after taking a deep breath. "If it's come to that, this group is completely finished."
No sound came.  Turning around slowly, Ryker saw Marcus pointing a large ominous black revolver right at his head. He recognized it as a .454 Casull, normally a hunting pistol. The bullet wouldn't even leave enough of his head for identification.
"Always the mercenary, eh, Marcus?" Ryker said rather calmly. "Nothing or nobody interferes with the mission. Not even a colleague. I guess the vampires win. Again."
Next to Marcus, Angelica was freaking out, unsure of what to say or do. Behind Marcus, Manuel had the phone receiver in hand, no doubt calling everybody up to the garage. Soon, a half dozen, or so, guns might be pointed at heads in this Mexican standoff.
If that were to be the case, he wouldn't go down alone. When he'd turned, he'd snuck his right hand up inside his jacket and onto the Czech Skorpion submachine pistol in his other shoulder holster. He'd already decided that his regular nine-millimeter Browning was too small to compete with a .454. He pointed the Skorpion right at Marcus, knowing if he fired, the spray pattern would undoubtedly take out Angelica and Manuel as well.
For what seemed like an eternity, but was actually just a minute, the two men stood opposite one another, perhaps seconds away from tragedy. Neither was willing to so much as blink. Next to Marcus, Angelica was frozen with fear. Nothing in her days as a bodyguard ever prepped her for such a situation.
"You bloody, conceited, arrogant bastard," Marcus finally said, after a bead of sweat rolled off his forehead and into his eyes. "I will not let you jeopardize this mission, put the gun down – right fucking now!"
"Make me!"
A different sound suddenly entered the garage and Angelica stepped forward, even as a look of utter fear spread across her face.
"No, don't!"
A loud boom echoed through the garage and out into the once silent night.
