Guess what guys??? Homecoming is finally here! **throws confetti and twirls** Actually the release was supposed to be on 25th October, but I decided to do an early release, let Sera and Levian loose to the world. Thank you Raina Campbell of Grapevine Book Tours for organising this event. You are one awesome lady!!! When we met--virtually--earlier this year, I fell in love with your name and I knew I had to have it. Or die. Thank you for allowing me to use it, and sparing me a very painful death (lusting after a name. Imagine that.) For the ladies who helped me with the ARC tour, Meradeth Houston, Stephanie Parent, Angela Brown, Cara Crabtree, Megan Cole, Angie, Sarah Brown, Vicki Trask, Taneesha Freidus  you are on rockstar status in my book. Let's grab those shiny guitars, and hit the road for the tour. Another huge shout out goes to the bloggers out there, who take time to help promote authors. THANK YOU!

EXCERPT

“Looking all perked-up, small bro. Want to tell me what’s given you that maidenly flush on your cheeks?”
Maidenly flush? Levian fought the urge to rub his cheeks and scowled at Tegue. The fact that Tegue had come out of their mother’s womb a few seconds before Levian made him feel he was entitled to being the big brother. Levian let him, what with him being his kin and all. There were some things one learned to let slide when it came to family. “Pack up, brother. Time to go surprise Sera.”
Tegue’s blue eyes widened. “They found her?”
Levian nodded, glancing over Tegue’s shoulder. Maybe he could invite the pretty redhead to accompany them, just to make sure his brother’s attention didn’t go wandering.
“Well, I’ll be damned.”
Levian’s gaze whipped back to find Tegue rubbing his hands, his eyes gleaming with… predatory lust? He tensed, clenched his fists, then shoved a thick finger at his brother’s face. “Be very careful, Tegue.” Killing his brother this early in the day was not in his plan. Besides, it would break their mother’s heart, and at some point in time, it would come back to haunt him. Sera’s leaving had caused him enough anguish to last three lifetimes. Going down that road again wasn’t really among his aspirations.
Tegue raised his hands, palms facing him. “Let’s not get carried away now, baby brother. I was stupid back then. She’s had a few years to think. Let’s await her decision, shall we?”
The euphoric wave Levian had been riding since he received the news evaporated, and was replaced by an anger so furious it should be shooting off his skin. His fangs dropped from his gums and claws unsheathed, unable to be contained. He yanked back his arm, smashed a fist into his brother’s jaw, and sent him flying. He stalked forwards, and before Tegue could scramble to his feet, Levian slammed his foot into his brother’s chest. He leaned down, baring his fangs at him. “Let’s get one thing very clear, big brother,” Levian said, his voice dropping even lower. “Sera is mine. Mine. My blood runs in her veins. If you think you will seduce her again and drop her like she’s not worth shit, I will rip out your throat before you can say her name.”
Tegue rolled his eyes. “There goes that sensitivity again. Really, Lev, you should learn to leash—”
Levian growled deep in his throat in warning. Tegue opened his mouth to speak, but Levian snarled. Seemed like talking wasn’t going to make his brother understand how serious he was about his mate. Levian lifted a clawed hand, swiped it across Tegue’s chest, and ripped skin. Blood gushed out, running down Tegue’s chest and soaking his clothing. Then Levian leaned lower and roared into Tegue’s face. If there was something that could get his brother’s stupid thoughts in line, it was his roar. He’d spent some time with lion-shifters in the L’atizia kingdom a while back and polished it.
Levian could roar with the best of them.
When he felt he’d made his point, he bared his fangs and growled for effect. There. That should explain things a little more clearly to his idiot brother. “Do we understand each other, Tegue?”
Tegue stared at him with wide eyes, running a trembling hand across his shaggy hair, then touching his bleeding chest. “Yes. Yes, we do, little brother.”
“Good.” Oh man, sometimes his generosity surprised the hell out of him. Any other kin would be ripping off limbs and body parts for the mere mention of their mate. Yet here he was, letting his brother go with only a roar and a scratch. If that wasn’t magnanimity, he didn’t know what was. “Let’s do this once again, shall we?” Levian pulled his face away from Tegue and cleared his throat. “We have a mate to find.”
“Of course, kind brother. Lead the way.”
Levian lifted his foot, panting. Slowly, his fangs retracted, but he kept his claws out, just in case his brother needed a little lesson forced down his throat again. He held out his hand to Tegue and said, “No hard feelings, brother. Just hard facts.”
Tegue grabbed Levian’s hand to pull himself up. He grimaced, rubbing his jaw. “More like a hard fist. Man, what did you load that punch with? Stones? And did you have to draw blood? You don’t play nice, Lev. Bad cat.”

“I’ve never been known to play nice, Tegue. Not when it comes to her.”

What's up Wednesday

Welcome to  What's Up Wednesday, a weekly meme started by Jaime Morrow and Erin Funk. If you'd like to join this fun meme, please head over to Jaime's blog to sign in the linky list. :)

What I'm reading:

I finished reading  Sara V. Old's
All I can say is READ this book! It's YA contemporary romance, and the protagonist is so funny and snarky. Completely refreshing. I really enjoyed being inside her head for the 200 something pages. Plus the guys *swoon*!

I'm currently reading:

 and

I'm enjoying the stories so far.

What I'm writing:

I submitted the sequel for Truly Madly Deeply You to Inkspell Publishing, and sent Homecoming to my editor last week. YAY!

Right now I am revising my NA/Adult contemporary romance, A Need so Insatiable, and really wanted to share with you a snippet. I'm really loving this project. I met my goal revising about 10 pages per a day. For the coming week, I'll keep the same goal--1o pages per day. :)

So, here we go! :) Enjoy.

Pasting a smile of my face, I swivel on the stool to face Lilli, and freeze. My hands clutch the edge of the kitchen counter to stop myself from grabbing the crochet afghan on the sofa and covering her. Plus the challenging glare in her eyes has me rooted on the spot.

I scan her new dressing code, trying not wither under her glower.

Her boobs are almost spilling out of the purple shirt which, I’m sure is two sizes smaller, barely covering her torso. The skirt is so tiny if I was to tilt my head, I’ll catch a glimpse of her underwear. And dear God, how will she manage to walk on those stilts without twisting her ankles?

I try not to choke on my own breath as I gulp for air.

Enough is enough. I’ve let things go too far, making up excuses for her behavior. I keep telling myself things will get better with us. With our situation.

That she will eventually stop hurting from Dad's death.

I hop from the stool and dash upstairs, grab a pair of black jeans from her room. By the time I race back, she’s already perched on the stool I vacated, and pouring milk in her bowl of cornflakes.

“You’re not leaving the house looking like that, Lilli.”

She tilts her hear to face me, reminding me of a cobra about to strike. “Says who?”

“Me.” I clench my jaw so hard I feel the teeth at the back of my mouth crack. “I’m telling you.”

She laughs, but not the kind of laugh that might inspire kittens to roll on their back or purr. “Last time I checked you were not my mother.”

My fingers clench around the course fabric in my hands. “I am your legal guardian. I’m your sister, and if that isn’t enough for you, tough love, baby. As long as you’re living under this roof, you will do as I say.”

Wow. I sound like my grandmother and that’s not shudder-worthy or anything.

I fist my hands to stop them from shaking.

Lilli shoves a spoonful of cornflakes in her mouth, chews very slowly then swallows. She flashes her teeth at me, white against the ultra red lipstick. “You can’t make me, Soph.”

Lord, just give me strength. “I know someone who can, though.” She shoves another spoonful inside her mouth, then lifts one brow. “Grandma Louise.”

Her face pales under all the layers of foundation and face powder.

Satisfaction courses through my veins like vintage wine, then sizzles as I watch that façade of hers crumble. She lowers her gaze. Her bottom lip trembles as she swirls the contents in the bowl in front of her.

Crap! Crap! Crap.

“Look, Lilli,” I say, moving to stand next to her. I lift my hand to touch her, but when she stiffens, I drop it to my side. Hope is the only thing that stops my heart from splitting in two.

“Things don’t have to be like this between us. I miss you. I miss Mom and Dad as well. I’m really trying here, can’t you just give me a break?”

What inspires me right now?

Pinterest. I've had a Pinterest account for a while now, but I tend to avoid it especially when I'm revising because I get distracted very easily. Three days ago, I was having a problem with a particular scene in A Needs so Insatiable, and decided to browse Pinterest just for fun. Five minutes later, I found a photo that literally knocked my socks off. All I can say is, Pinterest rocks! :)

What else I've been up to:

I'm spending  more time with my kiddies. The deadline to move out of the flat we are currently living in is end of next week. I've been dilly-dallying with this move, it's not funny..hehe I guess after living in a place for about ten years, I'm attached to it.

How about you? What have you been upto?

What's up Wednesday (2)

Today is my second What's Up Wednesday, a weekly meme started by Jaime Morrow and Erin Funk. If you'd like to join this fun meme, please head over to Jaime's blog to sign in the linky list. :)

What I'm reading:

I'm currently reading: The Rules of Disappearing by Ashley Elston. I'm 26% in and I LOVE it! :) as well as Today Only by D.Love. Such a great story.

What I'm writing:

I did revisions for my NA/Adult crossover, but didn't manage to add wordcount on my YA. I hope to work on that this coming weeked.

I was really ambitious last week with my estimated 7000 word count for Read.Set. Write. So this week my goal until next Wednesday is at least 4000 words. *crossing fingers*

What inspires me right now?

Finally, it's sunny - about 36 degrees today - here in Vienna. No one is going crazy and irritated anymore..LOL The last three weeks were horrible. Lots of rain, which caused flooding outside Vienna. So uninspiring. So, yay! to awesome weather. I'm completely inspired, although half the time I'm on my desk with packs of ice on my head to cool me down. It's still something. :)

What else I've been up to:

Actually, not much. My Kiddies close school next week so I'll definitely have something to do. Can't wait though. Working full time sometimes doesn't give us enough time to enjoy each other's company.

What are you currently reading/writing? What inspires you and what else have you beeen up to? Would love to hear from you! :)

Writing Is Like Knitting...

Yesterday  I was going through my knit and crochet projects and found these two bags I had done two years ago, and completely forgot about. To say  I was pleasantly suprised is an understatement. While 'ooh-ed' and 'aah-ed' at the awesome job I had done on them, my mind flitted from them to writing.

When I started crochet and knit as a hobby, it was mainly for therapeautical reasons (To me, any work I have the chance to use my hands is therapeutic, other than laundry that is.) hm, where was I? Yes. knit and crochet projects. The first projects were... not pretty.
I never gave up though. I bought magazines and downloaded those free patterns from websites that offer step by step instructions. Eventually, I managed to work those knit and purls, as well as crochet into something beautiful. Now I'm proud to call myself knitter, crocheter. (I'm not sure this is the right word)

So why am I comparing Writing to Knitting?

When I started my writing journey, everything about it was like my first knitting projects: missing a purl here, a knit there, a stitch somewhere. There were times I wanted to give up,really.I stumbled on, right now my writing is not perfect, but I can say I've come a long way from that first chapter/ story/paragraph I wrote years ago.I read alot and that helps as well. I enjoy visiting other bloggers and writers blogs. Wonderful people to meet and so much to learn.

Writing might seem like knit, purl, miss a stitch, but eventually with practice, patience and open-mindedness, that pattern repetition will eventually smooth out to a  beautiful Cable knit sweater or scarf, whatever you want it to be.

And with that, I'd like to share with you some of my knitting and crochet work. I call these ones "book bags" - I know. Not original..LOL. I'm working on a pink one for my daughter.
I will be doing a 200 follower giveaway soon as a thank you for coming back to visit me, check on me, comment, and even encourage me. A few words go a long way, and for that I REALLY appreciate you. I will do book depository giveaways and probably these bags.

My Book Bags. Crochet and Cable knit

Big enough to fit two books

Alyssa, my baby - and no, she is won't be included in the giveaway.. haha She wants to learn to knit so Aly and I have a hot date.
Donell - my other baby. He isn't included either ..haha He knows how to knit

Happy Friday! I say go forth, knit and purl and write with vigor! Let your mind, imagination and fingers take over to weave the best pattern ever. :)

Facial Quirks

Lately I have been obsessed with hunting down facial quirks - discreetly staring at faces on the street and in the train and tram, and also searching for articles on the net. One might wonder why. I promise you it's not because I enjoy scaring fellow pedestrians and commuters, though I have to admit these quirks make for interesting and memorable features.

I have been searching for different things that would distinguish my characters in the story I am working on. Something that will make them memorable.

I found this article written by John Yeoman at Writers Village on Character Signatures character signatures. Impressive. Writers Village is an absolute writer's dream.

Some of the facial quirks which coul make a face memorable :

  • A mole anywhere on the face (my daughter has slightly below the left eye on the cheek) We call it a beauty spot. :D

  • Gap between the upper front or lower teeth : My mom and my sister have the gap. Also reminds me of Anna Paquin from True Blood

  • Different eye colour - reminds me of Katsa from Kristin Cashore's Graceling

  • Crooked nose

  • Dimpled chin.

  • Dimpled cheeks - I have one on the right side. It shows up when I smile, so I tend to do that alot..haha my daughter has one on the left side.

  •  A wide smile sort of like Julia Roberts'

  • Full lips, think lips

  • Big eyes cast in thick lick lashes -  Reminds me of my son.  Sometimes when I'm applying makeup, I envy him for having such lush eyelashes.

  •  Big, intense eyes -  My daughter has such eyes. Sometimes when she looks at me, I have to avert my gaze. It's as if she can see right through me.

  • Scars - Thanks, Diane.
  •  Slightly lopsided smile - Thanks, Kelly

Oh, my left ear is pointed at the tip (not as extreme as an elf's though), and the right one is rounded at the tip.  Guess I  ear gene my dad. :D  That is part of facial quirk, I think.

Do you have facial quirks, know someone who has one or two? Or maybe you could mention a couple to add to the list?

It will be great hearing from you.  Please comment below, and I will add on the list above. Might come in handy for anyone in need. I realised it was not easy finding these on the net. Oh, here is an article in Glamour magazine. If anyone is interested. There are about 104 comments mentioning individual quirks.

Happy Wednesday!

Where do I get story ideas from.

This is a guest post I did sometime back during the Truly, Madly, Deeply You blog tour on Jacob's Beloved Books blog.

My inspiration comes from almost everywhere: Walking down the street, in the shower, watching TV, that space of time between waking up and sleeping whne my mind is drifting in all directions …

For Truly, Madly, Deeply, You, I was inspired by a couple who I visited in their home during my home visits. The man was 93 years and his wife 88. While I sat there listening to them, telling me how they were best friends even before they got married, my mind wandered. I began weaving a story: a friends to lovers story. Only in mine, the male harbors feelings for his female friend, but she has no idea how he feels. And the woman is so guilt ridden the only way she can protect herself is ‘block’ any feelings the hero gushes over her. As I am not an outline person, I sit and just let the characters take over.

In Truly, Madly, the story is more character oriented and less plot. More about friendship and love, and discovery and with a bit of salvation thrown in there. I focused on the two characters, Frey and Liese, and explored their relationship and their feelings toward each other.

There is nothing as heady as when ideas blossom inside my mind. Intoxicating.

What about you? What inspires you to write a story?

Dreaming Elusive Scene Solution

Last evening after the kids went to bed, I perched myself on my seat in front of my laptop to work on my daily word count for my YA fantasy. I sat. And sat, staring at the screen blankly, trying to sort out the scene which I meant to write for that day. My staring changed to frustrated glaring.

A while back when I outlined the story,  everything had been so clear, but for some reason, I couldn't really see the scene as I had imagined it before.  Being on my feet the whole day at my day job, and my brain screaming "I'm tired leave me alone" wasn't helping either.

I sighed, shut my laptop, snatched my kindle from my worktable and headed to bed.

As I lay in bed, I began analysing what the problem was, why that particular scene was giving me a problem. in between lying awake and my eyes fluttering shut, I began running the story's outline in my head (my kindle forgotten) up to the end of the story, but still had a problem with how to tackle that particular scene. So with that part of the story in mind, I finally drifted off to sleep.

In the morning, I had the full scene sequentially figured out. I could see how the chapter begins and how it ends - It's something sad that happens to my MC, and probably why my brain couldn't handle sad and tired simultaneously the evening before. Maybe I dreamt about it as I clutched onto the elusive scene, and the last threads of consciousness before falling asleep. I can't remember. One thing is for sure. I'm as happy as a bee.. :D

I'm really interested to hear your elusive/annoying scene/problems solutions. Please share, share.. :D

Writing vs Climbing Parks

So, the other day, Alyssa (my 7 year old daughter) and I visited the climbing park close to where I live. I was so excited because this was something that I'd always wanted to try out,  but never gathered enough courage. Me and heights don't see eye to eye. That and my fear dislike of extensive amount of water. As long as that said water stays from my knees downwards... I'm game.I can be found hanging out in baby pools in summer..haha  I'd make an interesting character in a story, eh? :D

Anyway, Alyssa and I got all belted up and readied to begin this adventure - to me it was an adventure.

I climbed up the ladder behind Alyssa, my heart thumping in my chest with every step my feet took. Up ahead of me, Aly gave me a wide upper-front-teeth-missing- grin, then turned around, her tiny feet climbing confidently and fast.

Once we stepped on the first landing, my eyes darted everywhere but below. Then this tall, good-looking late-twentyish instructor/climber who was leading the way turned and flashed us a smile, his green eyes twinkling in pure joy. I could tell he adored his job. He held out his hand to Aly. (Secretly, I think they employ those good-looking ones with easy smiles to put people like me at ease) My daughter brushed his hand aside and stretched her hand towards the ropes, grabbing them (show off:D) My daughter is a Scorpio. confidence and determination are part and parcel of their make up gene. So the guy just smiled and led the way. As I stepped on the first wooden step, which was wobbling like the world was coming to an end, I wished the guy would have offered me his hand.

I clenched my jaw, took a deep breath and braved on.

Then I got stuck in the middle. My feet trembled, my hands grabbing the ropes for dear life shook like nonsense. I counted the several dancing wooden steps I had to take to the next landing, glanced down at the distance between where I stood quivering and the lush ground below, then over my shoulder at the impatient faces frowning at me. Aly and the good looking guy were already waiting for me on the next landing.

At that moment, sweating and biting my tongue, that particular image reminded me of what happens sometimes in the process of writing.

After I outline  my story - it's actually more doodling than outlining because I always find myself drifting from the outline - it has a beginning, middle and end. When I begin to write a stroy, the begining is so clear. My fingers fly over my keyboard in excitement. Then comes the middle. For some reason the middle seems different than I had imagined, or thought. But when I look far ahead, the ending of the story is so clear. I know what will happen to the story/character. At times I feel like shoving that story aside to work on later..or never. Then I think about how I love the story, my motivaiton towards writing it....

So what do I do to get my middle groove back? I go back to reread my beginning and my ending as per my forever shifting outline, listen to the song or visit the place that inspired that story. On other occasions, I share this with my friends who are also writers. If there is a person who will ever understand the frustration, is a fellow writer. My cheerleaders.

Eventually I find my middle.

So in this case, I focused my attention on Aly...of course and the guy (I'm not sure why I didn't ask his name. I'll blame it on the initial excitement.) They cheered me on (although the grumblings behind me were getting louder with ever passing second) I rechecked my motivaiton. Why I decided to try climbing the ropes and ladders. Because I wanted to beat that part of me that is scared of heights. Know that I can make it, and for fun of course.

Eventually, I moved my feet, and made it. Didn't let go.

Much much later on when I swung my quivering feet from the ladder and touched the ground, I was happy I'd tried. And made it the whole way. Just like when I complete my first draft, I'm always so happy I ploughed on, didn't let the middle crumble the whole story.

What about you? What do you do to get your middle grove back?

Character, character!

Sometimes when I look back and think on my life as a pre-adolescent. Life was good, nothing to stress about. (well, other my homework. And that used to give me headaches on so many levels.)
I was stubborn, rebellious, loved the members of my family (when they weren't getting in my way) and had average grades in school, conflicted, loved challenges even if they included fighting. My interests were more in gymnastics and whenever I found an interesting book to keep my plotting mind occupied, I was happy. Otherwise, I'd head out and play with the boys and girls in the estate where we lived back then which is not something you get to see these days.
Coming from a family of five children, I definitely had to wedge myself in there to find a place just for myself.
I wasn't the kind to take insults either.  One time, a boy in primary school insulted a girl I knew. The girl shrunk back, but I jumped on my feet and confronted him. My mouth was always faster than my mind which always landed my in trouble. The boy didn't back down either, and called for a challenge. A fight, sort of a duel of which I readily agreed with so much enthusiasm. How dare he insult the girl species! The 'duel' was set to be the next day on Friday in a small field close to where I lived.
Later, I wondered what was wrong with me. Trouble didn't follow me, I always seem to follow trouble.
Come Friday, I was a trembling bag of adolescent rebelliousness, but I put on a brave face, accepting hugs from my girl friends, and ignoring the snickers from the boys.
By four pm, the small field was full of spectators, no single cloud in the sky. At least if it rained, the fight would have been scheduled for another day. Or never.

Apparently my younger brother, being so proud of me, had advertised to all his friends, and there's nothing as mouth-watering as a fight, especially when one of the fighters is a girl. Someone slapped a whip in my clammy hands, and I almost dropped it. Taunting from the boys permeated the air, making me sweat even more.  I made a resolve and glared hard at the crowd of onlookers. And my duel partner arrived with an entourage. (I didn't have any, just my brother. The girls who were supposed to be my cheerleaders glided away and merged with the  crowd, and became inconspicuous)
So, all in all, we fought, and emerged almost a winner, if it wasn't for the whip that tripped me.
That evening, I received an earfull from my mom, which involved a long, long lecture and her throwing hands up in exasperation. Then tended to my numerous wounds. I laid low for a week or so, before bouncing back to my old self.Being otherwise was just not exciting for me.

This is a character I would like to create for a story sometime.

What's your dream character, or a character you'd like to create for a story?

Beginning first chapter - The hook

I think I have written, edited and reedited the first chapter about ten times. Somehow I cannot seem to get it right, to manage that hook and suspense. Is it only me?
