When Silver Moons Rise Excerpt (The Lost Immortals #2)

By KaSonndra Leigh

Faris

The shackles tightened on my wrists and ankles, digging deep in my flesh. Dark magic eased its way through to my skin. I sucked my breath and held it, waiting for the fiery feeling to pass. Curse it. I could hardly move, let alone think. A small band of light eased in through the windows above me, giving the metal chamber a touch of softness.

"I ask you again, Faris Toulan. Is this girl worth your life? Your immortality? Or what's left of it anyway," Olivia hissed into my ear, a sneer on her face. I stayed silent, refusing to give in. She grasped my chin and forced me to look at her face.

I glanced deep in her empty eyes, and said: "Yes. Chela is everything to me. She’s all that you could never be. Your tricks can't remove what I feel for her."

Dark eyes glared at me. Her harsh laugh ripped through my soul. The kindness she showed me earlier disappeared at once. I didn't care. All I hoped for, all I ached for was a chance to see Chela again. I promised to return as the protector she needed me to be. I refused to go back as the thing she was cursed to destroy. That would only hurt her more than I had already done. I intended to keep my word.

"I do hope you understand what you've agreed to do," Olivia said in a low, but deadly voice, her breath on my ear, her cold fingers stroking my face. "By the time I’m done with you, there won't be any other name you'll call except mine. Because that's how long you'll beg for mercy."

She moved closer to my face and kissed my lips. I wanted to gag. Inside, I was already screaming. But her torture, or whatever she planned for me, was nothing compared to facing a life without Chela. By thinking of her face, her laugh, even the way she sometimes annoyed me, I could handle anything Olivia did.

Hell most definitely existed. I was about to experience it in full force.

And then I heard Chela call my name…

Chela

In my dream, I felt his suffering as if it were my own. Every burn, each tingle, the agonizing way he screamed from inside that awful dark chamber. Lying in my bed, I thought of the kiss we shared the last time I saw him. My eyes flew open as I grasped at the air around me, reaching for him, but finding emptiness instead. And then the tears fell, and kept falling.

My mind was shutting down one cell at a time. Even breathing took effort. It was as if my lungs were a balloon, and his breath was magical helium; something that only the luckiest girl could find…and lose.

"Faris." I called his name out loud, hoping with all my faith that he heard me. Was it possible for us to connect even with so much distance between us? I had to try. If he can hear me, then our link will pull him through whatever they were doing to him.

I can't just sit around and wait to hear news about his death. I had to do something.

"Chela. Can I come in?" My best friend, Alexa, stood in the doorway to my room. I didn't even hear her open it. She walked over to the edge of the bed and sat down. Her kind eyes filled me with warmth after so many cold nightmares had left me shivering.

"Baby, you've been in this room almost a week. Jalen and I miss you. Come back to us." She stroked my hair and laced her fingers with mine. Those small gestures were just enough to make me sit up and bury my face in her shoulders. "You got snot on my school uniform. Well, at least that's a start." I pulled back, glancing at Alexa's face as she studied her shirt. Looking up at me, she wrinkled her nose.

"Eew, gross," we both said at the same time. And then we both burst out laughing, covering our mouths as we giggled. She was right. Smiling was a good start. And then I heard a boy's voice speak in my mind.

"Chela, I heard you. By the lights, I heard you," Faris said.

State of Emergency by Summer Lane --Release Day

Happy Friday, my lovely friends! :)  Today a wonderful author friend, Ms Summer Lane, and she is  celebrating her New Adult Dystopian book release, State of Emergency.

 Book Synopsis:

Cassidy Hart is your typical High School graduate: A little shy, a little sarcastic, and a little naive. But when an electromagnetic pulse takes down the United States, she's forced to kick into full survival mode when she gets separated from her father.

Yeah. Things suck.

But with the help of a handsome soldier named Chris, she just might find her dad without getting into serious trouble.

Emphasis on might.

Oh. And there's the matter of avoiding getting killed in a world that's quickly turned into an active war zone.

It's going to change Cassidy's life. It's going to be a major pain in the butt.

Wow! Great blurb, right? I, for one, cannot wait to read this book. Would you like to win a copy? The rafflecopter is at the end of this post. I got a chance to ask her a few questions, so without further ado, may I introduce the awesome, Summer Lane.

1.       Please give us a brief summary of State of Emergency.

State of Emergency is the story of Cassidy Hart, a nineteen year-old girl from LA, surviving after the United States is hit with an electromagnetic pulse. She gets separated from her father and will do whatever it takes to find him – with the help of a former soldier named Chris.

2.       How difficult is it writing dystopian compared to contemporary or fantasy?

The research! With a story like this, I have to make sure everything is factually correct – survival techniques, the effects of an EMP, etc. I also had to make sure that Chris, who is a former Navy Seal, actually did things that were tactically accurate. There were other things like making sure the distances between point A to point B was correct – a lot of my story focuses on a journey made on foot through a post apocalyptic environment. How long would it take to walk 40 miles in the rain? How long would all the food in supermarkets last until it got rotten? Would people stay in one place or look for help? I really had to make sure everything was believable.

3.       If you were to choose a song that best fits the story, which one would it be?

The first song that popped into my head was Uprising, by Muse. It’s a kind of melancholy, gritty song about staging an uprising against a metaphorical invasion. That definitely fits a dystopian environment where everything is getting really crazy, really fast.

4.       I know that when I am writing, I can’t help but put a little bit of myself,  say a quality in a character. Does Cassidy have some of your qualities/personality or is she modelled after anyone in particular?

Cassidy is her own person, but when you’re writing about a character that’s so close to your heart (Cassidy’s been waiting to get published for a long time), I think a little bit of your personality leaks into her. I know a little bit of her sarcasm is definitely my fault. I take the blame for that one – as my brother would love to point out! Cassidy is also inspired by all young women who portray one of my favourite traits: Independence. She’s strong, and even though she’s lacking some real world experience, she can take care of herself when she has to – and does!

5.       My writing cave—It’s not a cave really, more like an open flatland where I can keep an eye on my children—is, well, messy. Sticky-notes, keepsakes from my children, pens, papers...what is your writing space like?

Ah! My writing space is currently covered with sheets of paper, ARCs, notepads, pens, scrunchies (yes, really!) and a thousand tiny pieces of papers with event reminders on them. My cell phone is also right next to my computer so I can keep up on all my emails – it’s pretty crazy. I always clean it up at the end of the day, but when I’m working…well, things just happen. Oh, and I don’t know why my writing space always ends up being a great place to have a snack…

Thank you so much for taking time to answer thequestions,  Summer. I wish you all the best with State of Emergency.

Thank you for having me! I loved visiting! J

Pleasing to the eye...

Hello friends,

So, I had Reaper's Novice cover redone to work in some of the elements in the story on the cover, and I really wanted to share this with you. Since I am too excited and smiling giddily from this end of the screen, I'll just post this for you to see the reason for my giddyness. :D

The cover was done by Ravven at  http://www.ravven.com/. When she sent me the final draft, I swooned. Yes. Swoon. That rarely happens to me.

Thank you Ravv.

Happy Monday!

A.M. Hargrove's Top 10 Favorite Books

I was asked to list my top ten favorite books and when I sat down to actually do it, the list turned into about two hundred. So then I thought about what these different books had in common. Was it the genre, the characters, the period they took place in, the mystery, or what? It turned out to be none of the above. It seemed that my taste in books is as eclectic as my taste in music. So instead of giving you my top ten favorite books, I’m going to give you my favorite male characters and favorite female characters. The reason for this is there are many books I’ve read where I’ve loved the story but didn’t love the characters, but then there are books where I loved the characters but were so-so on the story. That means when you read this, you won’t know if these characters came from books I loved or just felt indifferent about. But you will know I loved the characters in them.  Oh, and just so you know, these are NOT listed in any specific order or preference...just how they popped into my head. You may have to even guess which books they came from ;-)

Excerpt:

The decision is made for us when low murmurs carry through the air from the path on our right. Probably one we should avoid.
“Do you hear that?” I say.
Zig nods, eyes trained on the path the voices came from.
“We should take that one.” I pull him in the other direction. Holding hands feels so kindergarten. I can’t remember the last time I held hands for more than ten minutes—other than my best friends and boyfriend. Ex-boyfriend. Quickly I shove those thoughts away. This isn’t the time or place.
Zig pauses to take out the pouch containing the dust and marks the trail, then grabs my hand.
This path, which is actually a room of sorts, is not as wide as the hallway we came in, but it’s about thirty feet high, lit by sconces. Shelves are mounted on the wall next to the mirrors. About ten steps into the room, the use of the shelves becomes clear. Vials of different sizes and colours rest on them.
I slip my hand from Zig’s and inch closer, eyes glued on the vials, labelled in a slant, neat handwriting in chronological order of century, year, month, date, and hour. Peering closer, I realise they’re all empty. Something writhes in the mirror. I lean forward, my nose almost touching the shelf in front of me. Mist-like grey, almost translucent, forms swirl inside the mirrors. Even after Zig told me what Sinteler does with souls, I’m not prepared for the real thing.
“Dear God, Zig, come take a look at this.” I glance over my shoulder to find Zig staring wide-eyed, mouth hanging open at the shelves opposite where I stand. As if the souls can sense us, the wailing becomes louder and they thrash faster.
