Blurb:
It was the adventure of a life time. In an obscure marina off the shores of Maryland a schooner unlike any other ever built was discovered. Dorian and Diana Coe purchased the schooner and sailed from the shores of tranquility into the bowels of hell itself.

Prurient tales of suicide, murder, and the disappearance of an entire crew were hand written within the ship's logs.

On her decks sailed a well seasoned Captain and crew that never knew the schooner's shadowed past. The new owners ignored the words of men with integrity and sailed the Black Witch in the Spring of 1935.

Into the realms of illusion and pure evil the ship and its compliment sailed never knowing the fate awaiting them!

Book Excerpt:

“According to this, her maiden voyage took place in May of 1907. By the reading of this she had a bit of ill fortune for most of her time at sea. The description of her makes her sound like something really special. What exactly did you want to know about her?”

“I want to know what happened to her after 1914.” Dorian said.

Gale turned the pages reading quickly the hand written words, “According to this, after 1914 nothing unusual happened to her until September of 1926. The Australian Coast Watch found her on a large uncharted sand bar where an attempt to scuttle her had failed and she was salvaged for scrap. The official owners never lay claim to her. No claim for insurance was ever filed so the authorities dropped the matter. She was dismantled on February 5th, 1928. So we say goodbye to another lady of the sea.”

Gale closed the book and watched Dorian silently for a moment. “Why would you ask about a schooner that was of no historical value? Usually people don’t even know about such schooners as these unless they study them for a living, people such as myself that is.” Gale spoke these last words as a reflection of afterthought.

Dorian leaned forward, his voice almost a whisper. “Gale, how accurate is the files you have on this schooner?”

Gale sat back. “They come from all sources, especially official government records such as the ones on this schooner. I would stake my reputation on it that what is written here is fact and has not been changed in any form. My contact in Australia is a very reliable man.”

Dorian face turned ashen. “What if I were to tell you, she was not dismantled and she is very much real and intact?”

Gale laughed aloud. “That’s ridiculous, Dorian, you cannot brin
g a ship back from the dead.”

Shivers, right? Right up my alley.

About Scorpio Rising: Set in New York and Paris amid the glamorous and competitive worlds of art and real estate, Scorpio Rising takes the reader from the late 1940s to the 1960s through the tumultuous lives of its heroes. Alex Ivanov is the son of a Russian immigrant and part-time prostitute. He yearns to escape his sordid life and achieve fame and fortune. His dreams of becoming a world-class builder are met with countless obstacles, yet he perseveres in the hope of someday receiving the recognition he craves. Half a world away, Brigitte Dartois is an abused teenager who runs into the arms of a benefactor with an agenda all his own. When she finds out that her boss has an ulterior motive, she flees again, determined to earn her living through her art. This career brings her fame, but also the unwanted attention of her early abuser. Monique Domovitch’s debut novel, Scorpio Rising, is a compelling tale filled with finely etched characters and a superb understanding of the power of ambition. Scorpio Rising promises to resonate with all who once had a dream. Get it on Amazon or Barnes & Noble.

About The Sting of The Scorpio: In Scorpio Rising, Monique Domovitch presented a compelling tale filled with colorful characters and the manipulation of power, ambition, and greed. Now she gives us its spellbinding sequel, The Sting of the Scorpio, where Alexander Ivanov returns to New York with his new bride, Brigitte. The real estate industry is ripe with opportunity. Blessed with irresistible charm, ambition, and the single-minded obsession to succeed, Alex plots and manipulates his way to almost mystical success. Everything he touches turns to gold, but it’s never enough. When a hostile takeover bid leaves him struggling to save his beloved company, he suspects those closest to him of plotting his downfall. Brigitte, the beautiful redhead who abandoned her country and her career to become his wife, feels alone. In return, Alex has betrayed her time and again, each indiscretion cutting deeper into her soul. Brigitte’s son, David yearns to be an artist, but Alex’s plans leave no room for such frivolous goals. He grooms a reluctant David to become the heir apparent until a devastating tragedy attracts the attention of another young man. The Sting of the Scorpio is a rich tale of a man at the mercy of his own greed and a woman bound by her need for love. Get it on Amazon or Barnes & Noble.

About the Author: Monique Domovitch began writing at the age of fifty-five. Two years later, she has two self-published novels—her Scorpio Series—and a three-book deal with Penguin, for books she has written under the name of Carol Ann Martin. Never seen without her laptop, Monique and her husband travel the world and divide the rest of their time between their homes in British Columbia and California. Monique loves to hear from readers! Visit her on her website, Twitter, Facebook, or GoodReads.

Let's get to know the author a bit better through this rousing Q&A...

You’ve had varied careers, the first of which was modeling. Looking back, what did you learn from your careers?

From modeling, I learned that by pretending a person can become. I was the shyest, gawkiest girl, but walking the runway taught me to hold my head high and smile in spite of my fear, and with time, the confidence I tried to project became real. From my years as a financial planner, I learned that I, and only I, am responsible for my financial security. This is a lesson I tried to teach women during my four years as a television financial coach. And from becoming an author during the last third of my life, I’ve learned that it’s never too late to follow one’s dream. Like the old Nike commercial says, “just do it.”

You married again late in life. Is marriage easier the second time around?

Maybe not the second time, because I was divorced twice. But the third time is the charm. Mind you, I was on my own for twenty years before meeting my new husband. I came to a point where I decided I’d rather be alone than in an unsatisfying relationship. And I was very happy with my family, friends, career and dogs. My life was full. I believe that when a woman is happy by herself, she’s less likely to make a wrong choice.

Do you believe in love?

Totally and passionately. But, and this is a big but, I think that it can be very easy to mistake passion for love, and although they are not mutually exclusive, they are not always both present at the onset. I believe that love is friendship on fire. For that reason, unless one person really likes another— and I’m talking, ‘Like,’ with a capital L here— real love is not possible.

Who has provided you with the most inspiration for your writing?

It wasn’t so much a ‘who,’ as a ‘when,’ that really pushed me to follow my dream of becoming a writer. I was fifty-five years old, had just retired after a lifetime of being a career person while denying my real dream, writing. That’s when I decided that if I didn’t do it now, I never would. You know how people are supposed to ask themselves, ‘when facing death, what they would regret not doing?’ For me the answer was writing. Writing is what I had always wanted to do.

What are you working on at the moment?

I’m almost finished writing the first of a three-book mystery-series for Penguin, which I write under the pen-name, Carol Ann Martin. I’m having a great time developing the main character—a career woman suffering from a burnout, and who escapes from her life to a tiny community, only to stumble upon a murder. Next, I have a stand-alone book that is about half done. I want to go back and finish that one. And then, I have the rest of my astrological-sign series, the next in line being Taurus, set in the investment world. More greed, deception and betrayals. And then the second of my Penguin books, and then...Sometimes I think I’ll never have the time to write everything I want to write.

Do you have a writing schedule?

Yes, all day every day :-P Just kidding. I try to write eight full hours a day, or a minimum of one thousand words. But try as I might, I find that the first half of a novel just about writes itself. The words fly onto the page, but when I get to the fifty percent mark, the going slows to a crawl—especially in a murder mystery. I have to keep going back and forth making sure all the clues and details are there, but not so obvious they give everything away.

Where do you write?

I made myself a private space in my home and that’s where I go for privacy. But my best writing is often while I’m doing the dishes, or during long drives. That’s when my mind wanders and I dream up my next scenes, or come up with some snappy dialogue. I often stop and just down a few lines to remind myself for later.

What advice do you have for wannabe authors?

I don’t want to give anybody the same old advice about practicing your skill, getting an editor. My advice is, treat writing like a business, especially if you plan on self-publishing. Remember, your novel will be competing with millions of other novels out there. You have to come up with a plan to make yours stand out and get noticed. Of course the story and the style counts, but everything else counts too. Will you write for women? For young adults? For children? What publishing format should you choose? E-book? Soft cover? Hard cover? How much will it cost and how many copies must you sell to break even? How will you distribute your novels? What can you do to make them stand out from the millions of others? A new author should research what the best-selling authors have done to become successful, and then create plans of their own.

What do you do when you're not writing?

People are always surprised to find out that I’m also a hobby beekeeper. I have one hive from which I harvested over forty pounds of honey last season. And I love to boast that my honey is absolutely wonderful. It has a floral quality, because of the area where we live. Victoria is the most floral city in North America.

If you had one wish, what would it be?

That one is easy. I wish for a long and healthy life, so I can keep writing for the next fifty years. Okay, fifty might be pushing it. Make it at least forty years.

Introducing James Hatch, Author of The Substitute

On spoltlight today is another brilliant author from 'The Day The Sun Stopped Shining' Blog Tour. His book, The Substitute, is a Paranormal Comedy published by Soltice Publishing. The novel offers a hilarious romp through the final days of Miss Havana’s life, her trials in purgatory, and her afterlife with Lucifer. Witty and spicy, it leaves readers in tears of laughter.

Book: The Substitute

Author Bio:

Although his Bachelors, Masters and Ph.D. are in Chemistry and Meteorology, James worked as a scientist and system/software engineer before retiring a third time, then turned to writing. Extensive travel, from Thule, Greenland to Australia’s Great Barrier reef – and to dozens of countries in between – provide the real-life experiences he incorporates into everything he writes.

James enjoys boating, kayaking, skiing, traveling, hiking, tending nine grandchildren (no more than two at a time), and ballroom dancing, but his first love is writing. He has completed seven novels and one short story, and intends to continue writing in the Sci-Fi and Paranormal Comedy genres.

The Substitute Blurb:

Miss Havana’s public persona was far from the truth because, in her capacity as substitute teacher, the small community where she lived knew her as the breathtakingly beautiful young woman who demanded every student learn, but in her private life, ostensibly caring for aging parents in Chicago, she raced through the lives of powerful men, leaving a wake of destruction…and a deep desire for revenge. Little did she realize her conflicted life would end in a chaotic death at an early age, and to eternal conflict with the devil. The surprise ending will leave the reader stunned and gasping for more.

Book Excerpt:

Therefore, I devise a plan to murder her outright, assuming she and I are still approximate equals, although that assumption could get me in a great deal of trouble. Nevertheless, doing nothing will seal my fate and that’s not acceptable either. I remove Mr. Fixit from its storage box under the kitchen sink, the knife I used to assassinate my parents, and hone its blade razor sharp in anticipation of a quick kill. Miss Havana mustn’t see it coming. Therefore, I will act quickly, catching her by surprise when I step boldly out of the shadows and shove the knife deep into her heart.

My heart flutters as I relish the thought of the bitch gasping for breath as every ounce of strength ebbs from her dying body. I also feel deeply confident I will be doing the underworld a great favor because Miss Havana has brought nothing but pain and suffering to males like me since her birth.

Moving with great stealth, Mr. Fixit and I find a darkened niche just past a sharp bend in the tunnel between my lair and the great Hall of Judgment…and wait, but not for long. Soon I hear them shuffling along, although Lilith seems to be in a chiding mood over some judgment she considered frivolously lenient. The moment Miss Havana steps past my niche, I leap out behind her, pull her head back by her hair, and shove Mr. Fixit hard toward her solar plexus, knowing it will instantly rip through the muscles of her sinister black heart.
Unfortunately, before Mr. Fixit can reach its target, my arm slams against an impenetrable wall at about the same time I feel Mr. Fixit’s cousin prick the waddle under my chin. I barely have time to call out “Waldo!” before Miss Havana’s blade begins to draw blood. Thankfully, the fool responds immediately, and grabs Miss Havana’s wrist before she can complete her upward thrust.

Lilith stands to the side, shaking her head in disgust as the four of us dance awkwardly in a cozy little circle—Croco holding back Mr. Fixit, Waldo holding back whatever Miss Havana calls her friend and Miss Havana in my not so loving embrace. Shit! Who knew she’d have help!

Amid all the commotion, Croco breaks the silence, apparently sensing his moment of saving Miss Havana might be a good time to confess his transgressions. His fierce glare softens as he lowers his enormous chin in Miss Havana’s direction. “I’m sorry, My Queen. I have failed you. I’ve lost your little box.”

As if the stupidly insipid moment of confession isn’t bad enough, Miss Havana actually encourages the bastard even as she continues fighting against Waldo’s strength to shove the length of her knife deep into the underside of my skull. She snarls through frothy spittle at the edge of her mouth. “It’s alright, dear. I’ve already found what it contained.”

The jostling, grunting and shoving continues despite Waldo and Miss Havana inanely baring their blacked hearts to one another until Lilith sternly commands, “Enough!”

To my surprise, the walls of my home actually shake as her order pierces our ears like thunder. I truly believe Miss Havana, Croco and Waldo are as shocked as I because our dance troupe abruptly stops gyrating and we all look cautiously toward Lilith.

Frankly, what I see there scares the crap out of me because her bloodthirsty glare is augmented by the equally evil glare of four ferocious-looking creatures that stand rigidly resolute behind her. I have been here a long time, but never in my existence have I seen such horror stalking the halls of my home. For the death of me, I have no idea where she found them, especially since their apparent ferociousness seems to mimic hers. I fear they all mean business and I am not easily fooled.

Oh, what a great excerpt! Thank you for sharing, James.

Abruptly, he stopped his pacing, and crossed his arms over his chest, his eyes narrowed to slits as if in concentration.
She paused as well, eyeing him warily and fisted her hands to stop the trembling. Probably weighing how much I'd fill his stomach
"So, he sent you. A mere girl, not a day older than eighteen is my guess."
Selicia bristled, the triumphant feeling of before evaporating at the tone of his voice. "And you know that how?"
His eyes travelled up and down the length of her short height, and chuckled. "Go back, little girl. Tell your employer to send someone more...worthy of my attentions."

Introducing Georgina Kamsika, The Author of The Sulphur Diaries

Book Title: The Sulphur Diaries

Author: Georgina Kamsika

Blurb:
Alice is in deep trouble.

The police have found her covered in blood and surrounded by corpses. The dazed teenager explains that she had befriended an angel to help her escape her tiny Yorkshire village that is situated over a gate to hell.

Why? Because the Harvest was coming and the love of her life was up for selection.

Author Bio:

Georgina Kamsika was born in South Yorkshire, the youngest child to her Anglo-Indian immigrant parents. After attending a local catholic school, she escaped to university in Nottingham and began writing. Many years later, now based in Sheffield, she began taking writing seriously and has had published several speculative short stories in magazines and the odd anthology. She is lucky enough to have three friends who write and they all work together regularly, sharing ideas, discussing writing techniques and motivating each other.

She reads widely, everything from E.M. Forester to Chuck Palahnuick and values her comics collection – from Sandman to Preacher. She admits to being a geek and whenever she’s not writing, she loves reading and walking her two dogs in the local woods. Her partner, Andy, is very patient and supports her at all times, even when her only response is ‘shush, go away. Writing’.

The Sulphur Diaries Excerpt

Today

“There is blood everywhere, on the walls, on the tables; I’m not sure what I just stood in, but it's slippery.

"Johnny!" I scream, to be heard over the racket from outside, but there’s no answer and I can’t see him in the dim light. There's a wet thump against the outer wall, though I daren't look out of the windows. If I do, I might never be able to look away.

The shrieking outside is like nothing I’ve ever heard, and I freeze. Clenching my hands to stop their trembling, I peer into the gloom. Soft red light from some torches show me nothing but a puppet-show of shadows fighting outside. I recognise some of the locals: Mr Higgins, the Croft twins, their shapes easy to pick out as they struggle against the imps.

There seem to be more of them now. Where are they coming from? I remember calling to Lyle – not even an hour ago, however much it feels like days – but why are these imps attacking, why–”

“Thank you, Miss Murphy,” Detective Inspector Mehta interrupts me mid-flow. “When you say 'imps', what do you mean?”

I’m surprised back into the present, confused for a moment at how real my memories had felt. But instead of being trapped in the village, surrounded by fighting, I’m safe in a small, windowless room that smells of dust and paperwork. Sitting opposite me at the same small table is Detective Inspector Mehta.

I stare at the woman who just interrupted me. No smart police uniform for her; she’s dressed more like a Cosmo shoot for a New York businesswoman. Snappy woollen coat, linen trousers and an empty expression stamped on her face.

Looking away from this stranger, someone more familiar catches my eye. Brian Hall, my welfare contact since my mother disappeared when I was six. Sensible, earnest, and utterly boring, he's peering at me over his thick glasses, a smile mostly hidden behind his thick beard.

“Honestly, Brian,” I say, swiping at the wetness on my cheeks. “I’m trying to explain but I can’t do it unless I tell the whole truth. If Constable Mehta–”

“That’s Detective Inspector,” DI Mehta interrupts again, this time stopping the tape recorder.

Slumping back into my chair, I try to stop my lower lip trembling as I stare at the table.

“I’m sorry, Detective Inspector. It’s been a hard day...” I clasp my blood-stained hands together at the edge of the plastic table and sniff to hold back any more tears.

“It’s quite all right, Alice,” Brian reaches across the table to pat my hand. “You’re doing well. DI Mehta, I’ve known Alice and her, ah, background, for some years now. Perhaps if she gave you a bit more info, this might begin to make more sense?”

I blink away the tears and look gratefully at Brian, nodding in agreement. “I can do that. I can start from the beginning...tell you what I know.”

“Walk me through it.” DI Mehta leans towards me, her elbows sliding forward on the hard plastic tabletop. “Step bystep, day by day. Help me to understand.” She waves her hand, one sweep encompassing the blood on my clothes, the photos of bloodied bodies that lie scattered on the table, and I nod again. The DI clicks the tape recorder back on and settles back in her plastic chair.

“Here’s the thing; because everyone else in my village lies and cheats without even blinking, I value truth above all things. You can trust me...all of this will make sense if you let me explain what happened. I mean, I try not to judge people, but when your father lets you down and the village Elders refuse to help – what else could I do? Okay,” I sniffand swipe at the tears on my cheeks with the back of myhand, “then I’ll walk you through the whole thing, day by day – just like you asked. We all knew someone was going to die today. The funny thing is, I thought it was going to be me.”

The Kissing Tree Book Review

The Kissing Tree

Title:            The Kissing Tree

Publisher: Cedar Fort

Pub Date:   December 06, 2011
Author:       Prudence Bice
Genre:         Adult Historical Romance

RATING:        5/5 Stars

Blurb:

“Ridge! It’s really you!” Her eyes were drawn to his mouth, and she remembered the last time she had seen him five years ago…Now here he was rescuing her from a most humiliating circumstance, and all she could think about was that kiss.

Five years ago Georgiana stole a kiss from Ridge Carson under the community “kissing tree” the day before she moved away. Now eighteen, she finally returns to Colorado to live with her grandfather and help him with the cooking and cleaning on his ranch. Though she was taught how to be a proper young lady and flourish in New York’s high society, her heart never stopped yearning for home—or her childhood crush.

But when she unexpectedly finds herself facing the grown-up Ridge, with his Wild West ways, all her proper training begins to unravel. Now she isn’t sure she can fall for his improper cowboy style.

This light-hearted and charming love story will bring a smile to your face from page one.

From Netgalley

My Review:

The Kissing Tree is a wonderful and romantic read. I found myself unable to put it down for very long.  It begins with 12 year old Georgie stealing a kiss from Ridge as a dare she made with her best friend, Samantha. Of course under the Kissing Tree, leaving Ridge, smiling. Later that evening, her mother packs them up and leave for New York without so much as a goodbye to her friends.

5 years later she returns back home from New York,  after the death of her grandmother, all grown up and meets the all grown up Ridge who is now working for her grandfather, and he remembers the stolen kiss all too well. The problem is, Georgie left someone, (Dawson) in NY awaiting for her return.

The characters of Georgie and Ridge were so easy to fall inlove with, their dialogue funny, and I could feel the attraction for one another, through the feelings and how they reacted to each other, their thoughts as well.  Oh, a story about following one's own heart or follow logic, a heart over mind romantic story.

The pacing of the story was good. At the end of reading Georgie and Ridge's story, I felt the author had done a very good job of tying all the threads of the story together, and when she switched  to different POV's, I had no problem following or knowing whose head I was in. There was no moment of boredom in this book. I'd recommend this book to anyone who loves a fun, character driven romantic story, full of humour and a bit of love triangle in there as well.
